Hawks Banquet for 2013 - 2014 Season

I am a Hawk

I am an athlete.

I am an individual.

I am strong.

I am weak.

I have desires, hopes, and dreams.

I have goals.

I have fears.

As a team my opponent will never see my weaknesses. Only my strengths, never my fears, only my goals as they unfold before them.

I am not afraid that my team will see my fears, my hopes, dreams, or desires. I trust them to an unlimited level.

I am not afraid that my team will see my faults, because with them I am fearless, with them I have hope and dreams. With my team I am not weak, I do not have the strength of one athlete, but of many, combined, focused, and dangerous to my un-united opponent.

I become my team, and my team becomes me.

I do not judge, and I am not judged.

I have a goal, and the team has a goal.

The team goal is my goal.

All that matters is that the team reaches the goal.

They always told me there was no "I" in "Team".

They were wrong.

I am the team.

I became the team.

The team became me.

The team becomes an entity unto itself.

The team is strong, creative, compassionate, caring, authoritative, disciplined.

The team absorbs "I", and then there is "I" in "Team".

The "I" becomes part of something much more powerful.

They were right, there is no "I" in "Team", but there is a "Team" in me.

The Comeback Is Complete

Sunday March 30th was game five of the MFMHL finals in the Morden Access Centre at 2:00 pm.  With the series tied at two, this was for all the marbles and a trip to Westerns which was secured by Weyburn over Regina.  After three games going into overtime which two were Double OT you knew with these two evenly matched teams’ things weren’t going to waiver too far off track.

The Hawks came out of gate strong pinning Westman into their own zone the set the tempo early.  The first would end scoreless with shots being 9-2 for Pembina Valley.

At 19:26 on a two on one Lauryn Keen held on held on freezing Sky Brown in the Wildcats nets and sent a pass to Chelsea Dearsley who made no mistake buldging the twine.  Later at 10:56 on the power play Captain Keener put the Hawks up by two off a Chelsea Dearsley rebound from a Kenzie Dearsley point shot.  After coming oh so close to going up by three the Wildcats pushed back making it interesting with 2:29 left in the second.

In the third both squads battled hard but the defence kept the majority of the play to the outside.  Westman pulled their goalie but did not even register a shot allowing the Hawks to secure the win sending the home team’s fans into oblivion. Shots were 24 for the Hawks while Corrine Schroeder faced 15 from the Wildcats.

Coach Andrews comments:  "I am so proud of the way the girls battled in this series and the playoffs.  We have a lot of character in our room which showed in the playoffs.  We look forward to the next challenge facing the tough Weyburn team.  The fans were key and the support was so appreciated."

The Manitoba Provincial Champs now sends the Pembina Valley Hawks to Weyburn, winners of the Saskatchewan Midget League play-downs.  These take place April 4-6 in a best of three with the winner heading to the Esso Cup to represent the West in Hamilton April 20-26th.

Going To Game Five

Friday March 28th the Hawks travelled to Hartney for game four and with seats at a premium (even if you saved it or not) everybody found a spot and they were treated to a dandy,,,plus more! With the Hawks wanting to get off to a fast start Westman stole a page out of our playbook and only a minute into the game the Wildcats caught the Hawks off guard with a shot off the post and slid in the puck when Taylor Reimer thought she had it covered.  With their life on the line the Hawks weren’t fazed and pushed back at the 14:11 mark when Kenzie Dearsley fed Chloe Penner who’s point shot found the line to the twine through traffic, evening the score.  At 9:48 the Wildcats went ahead on a puck that seemed to get away from everybody and gained back the advantage.  Not to be outdone the Hawks rallied back three minutes later when Burgandy Thiessen muscled home the biscuit off a rebound in the crease off a Kate Friesen shot from the point after Abbey Bridges started the play.

Scoring more goals in the first period than in the last three games the Coaches must have said that’s enough for now as it was a stale-mate until the second overtime period! Not that there wasn’t any action or tense moments to put the fans on the edge of their seats (those that had one) and the Ref put his whistle away to let the girls decide the outcome on their own.

Putting the pressure on and pinning the Wildcats in their own end for three plus shifts in a row, on a face off to the left of Sky Brown Thiessen won the draw (and if there is ever a time to score your first goal of the year) Jenai Buchanan sent a shot to the net and for 2.7 seconds after it went off the pads it was up and over landing just out of the reach and inside the corner of the net to secure the win.

Taylor and Corrine Schroeder combined for 38 saves while the Hawks sent 35 Browns way.

Hawks Stay Alive In An Overtime Thriller

Wednesday March 26th in the Morden Access Centre versus the Westman Wildcats was the scene for game three of the MFMHL finals.  With a great crowd on hand the Hawks came out with something to prove pinning the Cats deep in their zone for the first half of the period.  That hard work paid off at the 9:09 mark when Jenai Buchanan kept the puck in along the wall and slid a pass across to Mackenzie Hutchinson whose shot came off the back wall and through a maze to Lindsay Michiels where she made sure to light the lamp.

In the second both teams traded chances and killed off a couple penalties when at 6:05 the Wildcats took advantage of a broken play to tie the game.

Early in the third while on the power play Chelsea Dearsley fed Lauryn Keen on the side wall who curled to the middle and sent a low shot through traffic which found the short side regaining the lead.  That held until the midway mark where Westman would tie the game at two.  Taylor Reimer came up big with some great saves late to send the game into overtime.

In Overtime with the Hawks on the brink of elimination, Hutchinson got the puck out of the blue line where Destiny Collins chipped it ahead to Keen where she raced in on a two on one where she saw an opening on the far side and threaded the needle.  This sent the home town crowd into a frenzy and a date in Hartney Friday night for game four at 7:30.

The Hawks outshot the Wildcats 34-30 on the night.  Before the start of the third period the Hawks drew the lucky ticket with the name of Barry Moore of Baldur on it for the JETS leather recliner chair and a pair of JETS tickets to an upcoming game.  These items were graciously donated by Brad and Norma Collins of Eldon’s Furniture and was a major fundraiser for the organization this year.  The Hawk’s families would like to thank all those that supported this project.

Hawks Go Down By Two

Sunday March 23rd the Hawks travelled to Hartney for game two of the league finals versus Westman.  With a huge crowd on hand the Wildcats jumped out to the early lead with a steal off the side wall in the Hawks end and a quick shot that eluded Corrine Schroeder.  PV pressed hard to get the equalizer only to go to the dressing room down by one.

Midway through the second while on the power play Kenzie Dearsley thought she had the tying goal off a scramble in front only to have it called back as only one person in the building lost sight of the puck which just happened to be the person wearing the red arm bands!  The Wildcats would take advantage of the momentum swing at the 5:19 mark by winning a faceoff and wristing a shot through a maze picking the top corner.

The Hawks came out pressing in the third getting a couple good chances before Westman would work the puck out a scrum in the Hawks end and just like that they were up three.  Finally at the 7:52 mark while on the power play and some great puck movement Kenzie Dearsley sent a pass across to Lauryn Keen on the left face-off dot who in turn sent it to Kate Friesen at the bottom of the right circle who picked the top corner and putting Pembina Valley on the board.  Two minutes later the Wildcats would get the back breaker and take the game 4-1.

Shots in the game were 30-25 in the Hawks favor and for the second game in a row just couldn’t get a break.

Nobody Said It WAS Going To Be Easy

Friday March the 21st was game one of the Manitoba  Female Midget Hockey League finals in Morden versus the Westman Wildcats.  The overall season record was 2-2-1 and both teams match up very well.  And if the first game was any indication it should be a heck of a series!

The first period saw both teams come out hustling making for a very fast period with some good chances at both ends.  At 3:59 while on the Power Play Westman opened the scoring on a sharp angled shot which snuck under the pad of Taylor Reimer.

Three minutes into the second the Hawks while on a PP of their own saw Lauryn Keen go across to Kenzie Dearsley who found Kate Friesen on the door step to slap home the equalizer.  Then with 17.7 seconds left in the period the Wildcats managed to jam one in to take back the lead.

Mid-way through the third while on a five on three the Hawks made sure to take advantage when Kenzie Dearsley played tag inside the blue-line with Jenai Buchanan who sent a shot to the net where Keen  tipped it past the traffic in front of Sky Brown.

The first overtime settled nothing and with 8:32 left in the second extra period Westman would strike on a back door play taking game one.  The Hawks would outshoot the Wildcats 42-34 over the night and just missing on some glorious chances early that could have changed the tempo of the match.

TA win…and then some. Some days, a team has one of those games when things go well.  Mark Mar. 13/12 on the calendar, as the Hawks drubbed the Winnipeg Avros 9 – 0 in the opening game of the MFMHL final.  Pembina Valley took advantage of first period opportunities to take a 4 – 0 lead into the dressing room.  This, despite a period of hard workwith little reward for the Avros.  As both teams worked to prevent anyplays from developing in the neutral zone, it took a quick shot from Lauryn Keen about nine minutes in before a goal judge was tested.Cassidy Carels fed Keen as she crossed the blue line who fired a quick shot along the ice past Avros goaltender Justine McIntosh.Only a minute later, on the power play, Kate Friesen scored on a  slapshot along the ice from the blue-line, with assists from Maddy Hutchinson.  With less than a minute remaining in the first frame, after Keen tried to jam it in on the short side, the puck scooted across the crease to Chelsea Van Deynze who slammed it into the open net for a 3 goal lead.  Looking for a momentum shift, a face-off in the Hawks zone, with 20-seconds left, Winnipeg pulled2011-2012  MFMHL & PROVINCIAL  CHAMPIONS
