League game play
2/25/2011
The team headed out on the road again and although a little weary from the recent travel finished up league play with an energetic effort and go into the break on a roll. The girls are playing well as a whole unit as of late and have found our scoring touch again, lead by Kristine Grenier with another 4 goal game vs the Capitals, with singles going to Jessica Kaminsky, Cassidy Carels, and Chelsea VanDeynze who has put herself on a scoring streak now. Last weeks offensive player of the week Kayleigh Wiens, was busy again setting her linemates up with 3 assists, Carels added 2 to her stats with singles to Kaminsky, VanDeynze, Haley Ostberg, Kari Braun & Kendra Friesen. We fired 42 shots their way while Kristin Friesen in net handled 16 and lost her bid for another shut out on a misplayed puck and was then forced to make a couple fantastic saves to keep her GAA down.

The trek north to Thompson on the weekend had the Hawks road weary but ready to go. We started the first game off slow on Saturday and found ourselves tied up after one & knew we had a challenge ahead as the Wild goaltender
brought her game tonight. After a break and a lineup tweak the girls had flow back & found a gear that looked impressive the rest of the series. Jessica Kaminsky
stepped it up and netted a hat trick with Madison Hutchinson scoring 2 on the powerplay up front & speedster Kayleigh Wiens adding 2 of her own, with a single from Kris Grenier plus a helper. Carels had a monster game flying around the ice dishing out 5 assists, as Ostberg & Steinert helped with two of their own and singles going to Derksen and Braun from the defense who fed the puck well all weekend.

After a quick sleep the girls fired themselves up on Sunday morning and started off where we left off Saturday, using our speed and good puck movement which proved too much for the Wild on this day. Kristine Grenier led the scoring today as she quite often does with 4 goals, Cassidy Carels continued to show game with her speed and had the hat trick, Jessica Kaminsky fired in 2 today, with singles by Wiens, Hutchinson & Derksen while Chelsey VanDeynze and Kendra Friesen found their scoring touches again lighting the lamp once each.
Madison Hutchinson excelled in her role moved up on the powerplay and also added 4 assists with Kaminsky contributing well feeding the puck with 3, with Ostberg, Wiens, Grenier, Carels, & Steinert getting two of their own. Single assists to VanDeynze and Derksen rounded out the scoring. The Hawks future looks bright as first year rookie Cassidy Carels led the team in points this weekend with 3G & 7 A = 10 points while actually being left out on another few assists as the refs keep stuggling to give the girls credit for their playmaking.

The team speed created 22 penalties and with a little time lately spent on the powerplay at practice we took advantage with 11 PP goals.  Kristin Friesen got both wins in net and although not as busy as she would have liked, had to stay sharp to add to her GAA, and was forced to flash the leather with a big glove hand save on a penalty shot. Another game on Monday to fine tune our game as we prep for the final run after a little break in the action the next few weeks for the Canada Winter Games, while we follow Kristine & Kayleigh out east.

The Hawks caught up on league play and had 4 games last week, and for the first time since the start of our season dressed our full roster and were somewhat all healthy.

We started off with a game vs the always fast paced Eastman Selects and although we were out shot in their home rink we left with a hard fought 3-2 victory on the stick of Kayleigh Wiens set up from Carels & Steinert in her first league game back from injury. Opening the scoring was Cassidy Carels from Van Deynze before Kris Grenier added hers from Ostberg & Kaminsky. Brittni Mowat was forced to make 34 saves to earn the well deserved win.

For the next match we travelled to the west side of the province to meet the Westman Wildcats and left their building with a 7-1 win. They played us very well and also out shot us for the 1st two periods until the mid point of the game when the puck began to find its way into the net for us. Kris Grenier had the hat trick with singles going to Kaminsky, Wiens, Carels & from a great point shot from Hébert. Wiens had a couple assists to pad her stats, as well as Van Deynze, Carels, Grenier, and Derksen. Mowat was a wall again with 24 saves as she earned another victory.

Our only home game this week had the Central Plains Capitals visit on Saturday and they brought along their usual hard skating effort. Yet again we found ourselves in cruise mode and out shot for two periods and tied on the score board, until the end of the third when Cassidy Carels found some urgency to avoid a tie as she scored on the man advantage with 25 seconds left in the game from Wiens & Brunet. Kris Grenier had the first goal of the game from Derksen & Hutchinson. Kristin Friesen started the game and made it mid way into the second before coach decided to rest her minor injury a little more and had Mowat finish up the game, combined they stopped 28 shots as we fired off 36 in the 2-1 victory.

The last game of the weekend saw the Hawks travel north for a game vs Yellowhead which ended in a shut out for Brittni Mowat making 19 saves as we fired off 54 shots. Jessica Kaminsky had the hat trick today, with singles going to Ostberg, Steinert, Grenier, Wiens, and Drummond with a big time wicked stick deflection parked in front from a Steinert point shot fed from Braun. Ostberg had a big game by adding 4 helpers to her stats, as well as Grenier with 3, Kaminsky, Carels, & Brunet all had one each.

Make up game still TBD against the Capitals before we finish up north next weekend.

______________________________________________________________________

It wasn't the Hawks day on Saturday when we dominated & outshot Yellowhead 21-2 in the first frame, had a sure goal disallowed and then gave them a break and finished the period down 1-0. The same continued throughout, as we failed to capitalize on our many chances as the final shots were 45 to 14 in our favour but only Haley Ostberg, set up by Carels & Wiens could beat a hot goaltender as we suffered our first defeat in league play in a couple seasons.

Our only game this weekend due to school exam week was against the visiting Westman Senior Ladies team and saw the Hawks come out with plenty of energy and grabbed a 5-0 lead after the first, and then continued to pepper the Westman goalie with shots to finish up with 62 to stay ahead on the scoreboard winning 9-0. Kristin Friesen played well in net when counted upon, and was forced to make several big saves in the 3rd to earn her shutout, facing 14 in total. Jessica Kaminsky had the hat trick, with pairs going to Kris Grenier, Kayleigh Wiens & Cassidy Carels, with Haley Ostberg chipping in four helpers.  Practices this week will see a little smaller squad, as some girls will still be studying for mid-terms.

December 4, 2010:  The Hawks second game of the weekend saw us up north in Hamiota to face the Chiefs and it wasn't long before the battle was on. We soon realized the ref was saving her breath by allowing their chippy play from the onset, so the team mission was soon just to stay healthy for the Hounds tournament next weekend. The end result had us out shooting the Chiefs 47 to 27, with Kristin Friesen solid in net making some fine saves amongst her 26. Kristine Grenier stole the show tonight, slashing through their lumber four times with 4 goals and an assist, while Kayleigh Wiens had the other goal. Kaminsky dished out 3 helpers, Carels one, while defence Brunet & Hutchinson were recognized with an assist each also. After Friday's free wheeling game with Westman this one was not a great game to watch or be a part of, but we all walked out of the building and picked up another W. Sunday to rest up and then two practices before we are off to Saskatchewan.

December 3, 2010:  The Hawks made their way into Wildcats territory on a mission to play 60 mins. down a couple bodies and did not disappoint. The team skated well and looks to be starting to get their game back as we outshot the home team 53 to 21.  Jessica Kaminsky was absolutely on fire and led the way with a 6 point night which included two goals while linemates Kristine Grenier and Kayleigh Wiens each added two of their own. Cassidy Carels responded with some extra ice by breaking her mini slump and had the other goal while going plus five and showed the need for speed all night.  While one line dominated the score sheet, it was a total team effort which was great to see as everyone was in a high gear tonight. Brittni Mowat deserved the shutout, keeping us motivated at the beginning by stopping a Cat breakaway early on and then made sure the lamp behind her was not lit up the rest of the way. Again a great effort by all shutting down a determined Wildcats team.
