Coach's game notes:

In our only game of the weekend, we were determined to have a good start vs Balmoral on Saturday with hopes to finish up with a better result then the last two tied match ups, and we came out flying and finished up the first with a 3-0 lead. Kristine Grenier started the scoring off unassisted on a great individual effort just a few minutes in.Then AP Lauryn Keen, playing in her 1st game since the October call ups, found the back of the net from the side of the slot on a great passing play from Steinert & Hutchinson. Caley Steinert then added to our lead when she rifled in a quick shot from Hutchinson and Hebert. The second then saw the Hawks out shoot the Blazers but some coverage miscues gave Balmoral the only goal in the frame. Chelsea Van Deynze then quickly restored our 3 goal lead in the third when she skated thru the slot and flipped in a rebound unassisted. It continued as an end to end affair until the ref got in the way of a breakout in our end late in the period and as luck would have it they quickly took advantage of the loose puck by firing in their 2nd of the game. The Blazers then pulled their goalie for the last few minutes and added yet another on a lucky bounce off a high shot that eluded Brittni Mowat to make the game interesting and was reminiscent of the last couple games where they had come back and tied them. Adding to the dramatics, we were awarded an interference penalty in the last minute but still managed to secure the win. Both teams ended up with 30 shots, and Mowat finally got her win vs the Blazers with 27 saves, and put up the wall at the end when we needed it.

Feb. 26
After a long trip for some, the Hawks met up with a prepared Westman Senior team that came out flying in their home rink and skated us to a scoreless draw in the first. Power forward Ali Nychuk got things going early in the second, with our first & the game winner set up by Drummond and a Derksen feed from the back end. Then Caley Steinert showed she's on the road to recovery from spending most of the season on the injury list by scoring the next two of her hat trick unassisted. Brooke Drummond then got her scoring touch back as she then added the first of her two from Hebert thanks to some hard work. Cassidy Carels then slid into the open at the side of the net where she seldom misses and scored on a sweet thru the crease feed from Kaminsky and Hutchinson. Before the 2nd was over Jessica Kaminsky stick handled her way through their D & added her own from Derksen. Caley Steinert got the trick when she finished the scoring onslaught in the 2nd period from Kaminsky & Hutchinson. The third started off with us on the attack again when Kendra Friesen fired a laser top corner from the high slot set up beautifully from Drummond and Nychuk. Brooke Drummond then netted her second of the game from Nychuk and Hutchinson, just before Chelsea Van Deynze finished off our scoring later in the period on a nice net drive tip from a Kaminsky pass. Brittni Mowat was busy handling the puck in net tonight and had to turn aside 19 shots to earn herself another shutout. A nice effort from the team on a very fridgid day in southern Manitoba keeping us on the winning streak with a short bench.
