Feb 14/16 vs Central Plains
On Sunday, Feb 14th, the Hawks hosted the Central Plains Capitals for the final regular season game. With no consequence to the Hawks, having wrapped up second place, but of major consequence to the Caps, who, with at least one point, would secure third place in the standings, the game was of interest not only to the Central Plains fans, but the Westman Wild and teams ending up fifth and sixth as well. This being Valentine's day, it seemed as though there was not a lot of love in the air, as the Capitals were very much a team on a mission. The Hawks were without the services of forward Ginny Grenier and for most of the game, Jenai Buchanan. Without two of their anchors on the ice, the Hawks mustered what they could, but they certainly didn't bring their "A" game. They looked a little sluggish for most of the game and although they got off to a good start early, the rest of the game was less than stellar. Two minutes and 30 seconds into the game, on a powerplay, the Hawks scored their first, and what would be their only, goal of the game. Katie moved the puck, behind the net to Chelsea, who was also behind the goal line. Chelly moved it up to Sage, who was eight feet in front of the net. Sage made no mistake, lifting a wrist shot on the short side, giving the home team the lead. After that, it would be mostly Capitals pressure, and at 13:18 they would even up the score. That would be the extent of the scoring in the first, with shots registering 9-2 in favour of Central Plains. In the second, the Hawks couldn't manage many shots or opportunities, but where they did, they either missed the net or had the shooting lanes clogged up by a smothering Caps squad. Central, on the other hand, had seemingly no problem getting pucks to the net, and Halle was called upon to answer the bell on several occasions. Halle played terrific, stopping all 14 shots she faced in the frame, while the Hawks only managed three on the Caps net. In the third frame, it would be pretty much the same, as the Capitals beat the Hawks to the puck, won many of the battles and threw whatever they could at the Hawks net. At 12:15 of the third, the Caps managed to beat Halle for a second time, to take the lead, a lead they would not relinquish. The Hawks just could not muster a response and although they had some chances in close, they weren't able to solve the the Capitals' netminder again, and with :49 seconds left on the clock, the Caps would seal the win with their third goal of the season. With the win, the Capitals secured third spot overall in league standings, giving clarity to the playoff picture.
Now the attention of the coaching staff will focus towards the playoffs, with two practices this week to prepare to host the Norman Wild on Friday.
