Game 5 vs Mid-Isle Wildcats (Team Atlantic)

Game 5, the last game of the preliminary round, saw the Hawks host the Mid-Isle Wildcats, from PEI. Although there would be no change in the standings regardless, the Hawks looked to cement their 3rd place seeding in the standings. The first few shifts looked like the Hawks would take their opponents too lightly, but then the Hawks started to pour it on. Makenzie McCallum would get the Hawks on the board first at 3:41, with Mackenzie Hutchinson drawing the assist. Six minutes later, Kenzie Heide blasted a shot off the post and in, making it a two goal lead. The assists on that goal went to Toni Conrad and Alyssa Alderson. Half a minute later, on a penalty kill, Makenzie would notch her second of the game, with Brooklyn Platt and Hannah Petrie getting the helpers. With about eight minutes left to play, the Hawks struck again, this time it would be Brooklyn waiting far side, slapping a one timer home, as she took the beautiful cross crease feed from Hannah Petrie. Captain Mack would get the second assist on that goal. To finish off the period in style, Makenzie would complete the hat trick by scoring on the penalty kill. Using her wheels to speed past the Wildcat defenders and score on a breakaway, Makenzie used a great forehand/backhand/forehand move, before sliding the puck across the goal line, and shortly thereafter the hats started raining onto the ice surface. Despite the lopsided score, the shots on goal were close at 13-11 in favour of the Hawks. In the second, things would settle down and there would be only one goal scored, coming off the stick of a Wildcat forward. Shots in the second were 10-4 in favor of the visiting Wildcats. In the third, the Hawks would manage one more, after Toni Conrad slid the puck back to Katie Heppner behind the goal line. Katie spotted Alyssa Alderson making a quick move to the middle and hit her on the tape. Alyssa rushed up ice, fighting off the defender and making a quick move in front of the goaltender, she slid the puck under the pads, making it a 6-1 game, and that's where it would end. The Hawks would finish the round robin with a 3-2 record, good enough for third place and a berth in the semi-final round. Next game for the Hawks will be against the Quebec team that had beat them earlier, by a 2-1 margin. Game time is 7:00 Friday evening.
